Practice good Sportsmanship.
“Good sportsmanship is viewed by the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association as a commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity. In perception and practice, sportsmanship is defined as those qualities, which are characterized by generosity and genuine concern for others. The ideals of sportsmanship apply equally to all athletic disciplines. Individuals, regardless of their role, are expected to be aware of their influence on the behavior of others and model good sportsmanship.” All coaches and teacher supervisors have completed the Respect in Sport certification.
Athletes are expected to conduct themselves according to the Rosenort School Code of Conduct at all games and tournaments as outlined in this Handbook. Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in an immediate review of the case in question by the Athletic Director and the Principal and appropriate actions will be taken to rectify the situation.
Coaches expect players to demonstrate a commitment to the team by attending all practices and games. Each player should be willing to make a solid effort to improve one’s skills, encourage team-mates, have a positive attitude and show good sportsmanship on and off the court. Coaches as well, are to adhere to the playing policy for each level and display a positive attitude and good sportsmanship on and off the court. Athletes are expected to inform coaches with as much notice as possible if they will be missing practices or games, medical concerns or any other information directly impacting their involvement with the team.
Should a concern or a question regarding a coach’s decision arise, please contact the Athletic Director no sooner than 24 hours after the event.
Junior Varsity (Grades 9 & 10)
Junior Varsity teams are competitive and will compete in the Zone 4 Athletic Association. Depending on the sport, the coach and Athletic Director may decide to cap the number of players on a team. Additionally, some players may be added to the team as APs or alternate players. AP players are first year JV players. They are to be at all the practices and will be played at games and tournaments at the coach's discretion. Grade 9 and 10 players making a varsity team may only play both teams at the coach’s discretion after consulting with the Athletic Director.
Varsity
Varsity teams compete in Zone 4 and strive to advance to the Provincial Championships. Coaches will make decisions regarding team composition and playing time accordingly. Students in grade 9-12 will be eligible to play for a Varsity team. Athletes must be under 19 years as midnight of the current school year, August 31st. They may play up to 4 years of competition from the enrollment in grade 9. All athletes must be a “Bona fide Student”, meaning that he/she must be enrolled in a minimum of 2 courses per semester. As a member of the Varsity team, neither age or grade level may determine the amount of playing time a particular athlete receives. Where the numbers allow, students who do not make the varsity team may be eligible to play on the Junior Varsity team, upon zone approval.
Junior Varsity & Varsity teams will follow the guidelines for participation and discipline under the rules of Zone 4 and MHSAA and Rosenort School’s Code of Conduct.
